With the French Open championships starting at Roland Garros on Monday, the home crowds will cheer on the participants vociferously in the men's singles championship, hoping to push them towards the first triumph for a domestic player in two decades.
If it were not for Yannick Noah's clay magic in 1983 they would now be in waiting for 57 years. France's real heyday was in the 1920s and 1930s when René Lacoste, Henri Cochet and Jean Borotra were among the world's finest players. The three teamed for eight straight victories in the first eight French Open editions open to players from all nations.
After a six year silence due to World War II, Marcel Bernard delighted the home crowd by defeating Jaroslav Drobny in the final and becoming the last French player to win the event before Noah's 1983 heroics. In that year, Noah acquired eternal fame by upsetting title holder Mats Wilander of Sweden in the final.

Extravagant Brazilian Helio Castroneves finds himself in a position no other race driver has been in in the last 31 years: faced with the opportunity of winning the Indianapolis 500 in three successive years.
Al Unser, Sr. was the last driver who had a shot at achieving what no driver has accomplished in Indy 500 history, clinching the elusive hat-trick.
On Sunday, the Indianapolis Speedway will reveal if Castroneves is up to the task and if race fans are to see more safety fence climbing antics from the man aptly and affectionately nicknamed "Spiderman". The Brazilian will lead the way from pole position and will be driving car number 3.

With two clubs from Italy in the UEFA Champions League final for the first time, Italy has now moved four appearances clear of Spain in terms of representatives in the Champions Cup/Champions League. There have now been 23 final participations from Italian clubs with this year’s finalists AC Milan and Juventus leading the way with nine and seven respectively.
This is a big improvement on recent years for Italian clubs – only one had reached the last eight of the competition in the three seasons before this one – and with Juventus knocking out three Spanish clubs on the way to the final, Italy have replaced Spain as the dominant force in this season’s competition.
The UEFA Champions League has always been dominated by these two nations with only one of the eleven finals (including this year) being contested by two teams from outside Spain and Italy. That was the dramatic 1999 final when Manchester United scored two goals in injury time to beat Bayern München 2-1.

Mons – La Louvière |
 |
In the Belgian Jupiler League nearly every decision has been finalised. Club Brugge are league champions and they are joined by Anderlecht and Lokeren SNW in receiving European berths. KV Mechelen and Lommel have been relegated. The league top scorer title, however, is still very much at stake.
Ninth ranked Mons will visit 15th ranked La Louvière this Saturday on the final matchday of the Belgian Jupiler League. Mons striker Cédric Roussel surprisingly leads the Belgian top scorer list with 22 goals before RC Genk’s Wesley Sonck (21 goals) and Nenad Jestrovic from Anderlecht (20 goals).
Roussel is responsible for almost half the goals Mons have scored this season. The only player who topped this percentage in the past 20 years is Josip Weber. The Cercle Brugge striker scored 60 percent of his side’s production in the 1993/1994 season.
If Roussel’s succeeds in winning the top scorers title, it will be the first time since WWII that Mons has delivered the top scorer in the Belgian league. So far Standard Liège supplied most top scorers (7) followed by Beerschot and Anderlecht who each housed five top scorers.

On Sunday and Monday Mario Cipollini broke Alfredo Binda's record of most Giro stage victories and improved the mark to 42. In Stage 9 from Arezzo to Montecatini Terme Cipollini beat Robbie McEwen in a bunch sprint. McEwen and more notably Alessandro Petacchi had made life miserable for the 36-year-old in the first week of the Giro, but Il Re Leone showed his true colours after all.
No other rider has been able to win so many stages in a specific Big Tour. Delio Rodríguez is record holder in the Vuelta a España (39 stage wins) and Eddy Merckx leads the way in the Tour de France (34 wins). This combined with the fact that Cipollini is the reigning world champion makes it remarkable, to say the least, that Cipollini's team (Domina Vacanze) was among those snubbed in the allocation of Tour de France wildcards.

Belgium's Kim Clijsters must be considered one of the favourites to win the women's singles title at the French Open, which starts on Monday. The world number two displayed her form in Hamburg's clay championship, defeating Amelie Mauresmo for her thirteenth career singles title.
Daughter of football great Leo, Clijsters only turns 20 on June 8, the day following the women's singles final at Roland Garros this year. Clijsters, a winner of two singles crowns on clay, joins eight other active players who have reached the women's singles final at the French Open. Her main competition should come from two of the other eight.
If the seeded players live up to their billing, Clijsters will meet Venus Williams in the semi-finals and sister Serena in the final. Clijsters and Martina Hingis are the only players who have beaten both Williams sisters in a women's singles final at least once.

On Sunday Guillermo Coria beat fellow countryman Agustin Calleri in three sets (6-3, 6-4, 6-4) in the final of the Tennis Masters Series tournament in Hamburg. Following a 2001 victory in Viña del Mar this was Coria's second singles title.
The 21-year-old is the second Argentine champion in Hamburg after Guillermo Vilas won the tournament in 1978. All semi-finalists in Hamburg this year had the Argentine nationality. Roland Garros will start next week and the Argentines are therefore the players to watch in Paris.
Coria will be eager to improve on his best result in a Grand Slam: in this year's Australian Open he reached the last 16. Namesake Canas was the best Argentine at Roland Garros last year, reaching the quarter-final. The hungry Argentine contingent looks likely to improve upon this, if it is agiven that strength comes in numbers. The best French Open result by a player from that nation in recent history is Franco Squillari's semi-final appearance in 2000.
