With Celtic winning 2-1 at Kilmarnock and Rangers losing 2-0 at home to Dundee, a miserable week was completed for Rangers on Wednesday evening. The Gers were eliminated from the Scottish Cup by Dundee United last weekend so they will not appear in either of the two cup finals in Scotland this season. In the Premier League, they now lie sixteen points behind arch rivals Celtic and therefore have almost no chance of winning the title. How many times before have Rangers failed to win the title and appear in neither final since the League Cup was introduced in 1946? When was the last time this happened?

 Statistics of the Week

At the World Championships Single Distances in Salt Lake City, a world record was broken no less than six times. The world record in the women's 1,000 metres having been broken twice, the fastest time in five distances (half of all official distances) has been improved.

The Salt Lake City track is to stage the speedskating events at the 2002 Winter Olympics and it has been designed for world records. Of the tracks that are known to be fast, Salt Lake City might even challenge Calgary's Olympic Oval's status as the fastest track in the world. Speedskating experts believe the superior altitude of the Salt Lake City track should give it the edge over the Canadian venue. Since the first genuine onslaught of world records in 1975 at the meticulously designed Medeo track in Alma Ata, various tracks have been vying for the elusive trademark of being the world's fastest.

After the defeat of Evander Holyfield (born 19-October-1962) against John Ruiz last week and the title loss of Leo Gamez (born 8-August-1963) versus Shoji Kobayashi on Sunday, Canadian Davey Hilton (born 09-December-1963), the WBC's super middleweight title holder, is now the oldest reigning world champion in the major governing bodies (IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO). Hilton, currently on trial for sexual assault, will lose his title, if he's found guilty and sent to jail.

Australia have lost the second test against India in sensational fashion, thereby ending their world record sequence of successive victories.

The match with India has seen a succession of records tumble before India became only the third team in history to follow on in a test match and still win. On all three occasions that this happened, Australia have been the losing team. Australia lost to England by ten runs 106 years ago in Sydney after England had followed on 261 runs behind. The legendary Headingley test of 1981 also saw England beat Australia, this time by eighteen runs. England had followed on 227 runs behind and Australia had only needed 130 to win. This was even more remarkable as England were still 92 behind with only three of their second innings wickets left before Ian Botham launched his assault to 149 not out.

This India-Australia test, in Calcutta, was a slightly different proposition with India following on 274 runs behind but then amassing 657-7 declared. Australia therefore needed 384 to win, a hugely tough target and were bowled out for 212, the last seven wickets fell for just 46 runs.

Winning a test match after following on
Winners Losers Winning margin Venue Season
England Australia 10 runs Sydney, AUS 1894/95
England Australia 18 runs Headingley, ENG 1981
India Australia 171 runs Calcutta, IND 2000/2001
Note: A team follows on if they bat second and are bowled out for a total which is more than 200 less than the team who batted first.

The Netherlands' Carl Verheijen never looked like winning the 10,000 metres at the World Championships Single Distances until he turned on the afterburners 8,400 metres into the race. In the final lap, which Verheijen completed in under thirty seconds, he managed to overtake countryman Bob de Jong who was on course for the world title. Russia's Vadim Sayutin came in third. Both de Jong and Sayutin had chosen to skate a steady race and try to reduce their loss of pace in the end. Verheijen opted for a different strategy. He paced himself for two-thirds of the race and exploded into action over the final laps. Some people believe that Verheijen might even be coming out of the shadow of Olympic champion Gianni Romme in the future.

It will be a clash of epic proportions at the 2001 World Figure Skating Championships in Vancouver, Canada, when the men’s singles event gets underway. Elvis Stojko of Canada and Aleksey Yagudin of Russia, both three times World champions, have readied themselves for battle. Stojko, skating on home country ice, and Yagudin, defending his three consecutive titles, are ironically both skating their free skating programme to the Academy Award nominated movie, Gladiator.

After months of bad luck and injuries, Stojko, who will turn 29 on the night of the free skate, must rely on his “strength and honour” and a colossal amount of World Championships experience, as he is untested competitively this season. Yagudin, however, will depend on his year-to-year consistency in attempting to defend his titles.

 Match of the Week

FC Nantes - CS Sedan Ardennes

"Ici on roule en Smart" ("Here we drive Smart") are the words of the 54-year-old head coach of the Club Sportif Sedan-Ardennes, Alex Dupont, to point out that the current number three of the ranking in the French Division 1 haven't renounced their descent. In three years they have reached the highest level with player who were railed on a side track with other clubs. This weekend third placed Sedan will travel to the Atlantic coast to face second ranked FC Nantes. Lille lead Division I on goal difference over Nantes. Sedan are three points off the pace in third place. Nantes have the advantage of a good home record against 'Les Sangeliers' ('The Wild Boars'). The club from the French Ardennes have not been able to win a single match against 'Les Canaris'.

 Spotlight

In St. Moritz (SUI) on December 17th last year it seemed as if the young career of Croatia's Janica Kostelic should be over already. In the downhill training she injured her knee badly and it was not sure whether she would ever come back. However, not only did she come back, she had an incredible winning streak in the slalom and finally won the overall World Cup.

This season Janica Kostelic has won eight out of nine slaloms which, combined with the two victories before her injury, result in the second longest winning streak in the Women´s Alpine World Cup. Even though Kostelic has beaten the eight victories of Vreni Schneider, she still failed to win all the races of the season as Sonja Nef won the final World Cup race of the season. Schneider won all the slaloms in the 1988/89 season plus the first one of the subsequent season.

Yuriy Borzakovskiy, a 19-year-old athletics prodigy, took the 800 metres by storm at the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon, Portugal. He beat the pack in a time of 1:44.15. For those who speak Russian it must have been ominous because his name means "greyhound" in his native tongue.

 Football Facts

Marco di Vaio's feat of scoring all four of Parma's goals against Brescia was a first in Italy this season. However, it has happened on four other occasions in the top six European leagues. Spain, France and Germany have not seen a player score more than three goals in a match this season but the English and Dutch leagues have both had two occurrences.
On all four occasions, the players concerned were from outside of the country that they are playing in. Jerrel Hasselbaink and Mark Viduka are Dutch and Australian whereas Gluscevic and Kezman both represent Yugoslavia.
Di Vaio joined only five other players who have scored four times in one match over the last ten years in the Serie A. Roberto Baggio and Marco van Basten once netted four goals on the same matchday. Dejan Savicevic and Pierluigi Casiraghi also played a large role in a couple of unusually large scores in the Serie A. But the last one to ever accomplish the feat was Uruguayan striker Marcelo Otero who scored four goals on the first matchday of the 1996/1997 Serie A season. The first ever to score four goals in one match was Juve's Munerati, who did it on the fifth matchday of the 1929/1930 season, the first nationwide season in the Serie A. But four goals in one match hardly represent a record. The great Silvio Piola and Omar Sivori once netted six goals in one match.

Rangers have only suffered a season as miserable as this one on seven previous occasions. The first came in 1954 while the last was fifteen years ago. Manager Jock Wallace paid the price in 1986 and lost his job. His replacement Graeme Souness then delivered on a massive scale in the coming years. Current manager Dick Advocaat is therefore highly unlikely to survive into the 2001/02 season.
